When should my kid start talking?

Hi everyone! I’m a mom of an almost 2.5 year old boy, and I’ve been feeling a bit unsure lately. He doesn’t say much with words…just one or two at most. Mostly, he communicates by pointing, making sounds, or crying when he wants something. I’m wondering, is this normal at this age? Should I just wait it out, or is it time to talk to a specialist? I’d love to hear if anyone else has experienced this!

Hey Maura, I totally get what you’re feeling! My son was similar at that age, barely spoke and relied on gestures. It was frustrating and a bit scary, but honestly, kids can surprise you with how quickly things change. At 2.5, some are still focused on absorbing words before using them. If he’s understanding what you say, following instructions , I think that’s a great sign! With my little one, we started with short games like naming objects around the house, and one day, it just clicked. Trust your gut if it feels off to you, there’s no harm in getting a speech evaluation, but there’s also a good chance he’s just taking his time.

My daughter didn’t say much until 3 and now she won’t stop talking for even a second! Seriously, it’s like they store it all up and then release it all at once. :joy:
