Tips for engaging a 20-month-old in fun activities?

My 20-month-old son is FULL  of energy and curiosity! Lately, I’ve been looking for new ways to engage him in fun and educational activities at home. He’s at that stage where he’s exploring everything, and I want to make sure I’m providing him with a good balance of learning and play.

I’m curious to hear from other parents—what activities have you found to be most effective and enjoyable for your little ones around this age? Any creative ideas or favorite toys that have been a hit?

Thanks in advance!

I don’t have any advice or ideas, yet. We just brought my husband home to be. A SAHD due to issues with consistent childcare. I’ve been struggling with ideas on what they can do each day. It feels overwhelming to have to come up with ideas and supplies each week.

We did just get a season pass to the local pumpkin patch. They have tons of activities, things to see/do and play so we’re looking forward to using that once every week or so.

We have also enjoyed taking our son to the local library story time as a way to meet other children.

I’ve been surprised with my kids how less is often times more. Intentional living is a lifesaver and can be beneficial for your little one to boot! Living your life and inviting your child to participate in that life with you rather than building your life around them. It goes against our instincts I think, but your kids really want one thing— you. You are their anchor. So integrating your toddler into chores (putting wet clothes in the dryer one piece at a time, or pulling the spoons out of the dishwasher and putting them where they go) or other tasks like letting them watch and “help” you cook or are all little ways you can enrich your child’s life through positive associations with critical life skills.

@Sophie great there’s a local pumpkin patch near you, those are really fun! And the library story time sounds super educational.

Coming up with new ideas every week is super overwhelming…what’s your child’s age?

@Jessica 100% agree!! Your comment really got me thinking—sometimes we tend to over-control our kids’ activities. Maybe it’s better to let them take the lead more often (within safe limits, of course) and just follow their cues.

Oh for sure. And I wouldn’t necessarily do super different things each day for each week. Just trying to come up with stuff for them to do a few times a week that’s fun and engaging.

My toddler is 19 months this week. We’ve been exploring art supplies and working on ideas for when it gets colder. He’s spent the majority of his summer outside, so I’ve been looking for ideas on indoor activities.
