I'm a mother of a 5 year old, and I'm starting to get desperate with his eating habits

He just wants his usual foods: white rice, cheese, and apples. If I try to give him something different, he frowns and says no, as if I’m offering him something terrible. I’ve tried everything from playing games to letting him decide the menu, but nothing changes. I worry that he’s not eating enough or that one day he’ll have no choice and go hungry. I don’t want mealtimes to be a fight, but every time mealtime rolls around, I brace myself for battle

This is exactly what’s happening at my house! Do you ever find that he’ll eat something at daycare, school but refuse it at home? My son once ate carrots at a friend’s house, but when I gave him the exact same thing, he acted like I was feeding him poison. :woman_facepalming: I don’t get it. Maybe they just like to keep us on our toes??

Ugh, same. My kid is basically surviving on buttered pasta, bananas, and yogurt. I swear if I even suggest a vegetable, he looks at me like I just insulted his entire existence. I don’t even know what I’m more tired of, making the same three meals or the mini heart attack I get every time I think about his nutrition

I’ve been through this with all three of my kids. My best advice? Stop making it a battle. Offer tiny portions of new foods alongside his safe foods. Don’t pressure, don’t bribe, just let it be there. Also, sometimes letting them help cook makes a difference. My middle child wouldn’t touch veggies until she helped chop them for a salad. Now she thinks she’s a chef and actually eats what she makes. :joy: Might be worth a shot!

Hang in there, mama! My oldest went through this, too, and I thought it would never end. He’s 8 now and eats way more variety than I ever expected. What helped was just… backing off. I stopped pushing, kept offering new foods without pressure, and one day he just started trying things. It wasn’t overnight, but it DID get better. You won’t be making rice and cheese forever, I promise!
