Hi everyone, I’m feeling really overwhelmed right now and could use some advice. My 7-year-old son has been having some trouble in school, and his teacher recently mentioned that he might have a learning disability. She also brought up attention issues, which got me thinking about some of the things I’ve noticed at home. He struggles to follow through on tasks and gets frustrated easily with things that seem simple for other kids his age, like reading or even keeping up with homework. I guess I never really connected these behaviors to a possible learning disability before, but now I’m wondering if I’ve been missing the signs.
I’ve noticed at home that he sometimes avoids activities that require focus, like reading or writing, and he often gets really upset when he doesn’t understand something right away. He tends to daydream a lot or forget what I just asked him to do. I always thought he was just distracted or maybe just didn’t enjoy those things, but now I’m worried it’s more than that. I feel guilty for not realizing this sooner—am I late in getting him the help he might need?
We haven’t gotten an official diagnosis yet, but I’m feeling so lost. I don’t even know where to start. Has anyone else gone through something like this with their child? What steps did you take at home and at school to support them? Any advice or experiences would really help right now. I just want to make sure I’m doing what’s best for him.
It’s great that you’re already talking to the teacher and looking for answers. Learning difficulties can affect how the brain processes information, whether in reading, writing, or math, but with the right support, kids can succeed. The first thing I did was speak with my child’s doctor, and together with the school, we created a personalized plan to help him. At home, I focused on his strengths and kept a consistent study routine. Stay in touch with the teachers and don’t hesitate to seek external support if needed. You’ll see gradual improvement!
